Schools/Education

Public schools are regulated by the province, but that doesn’t mean HRM can’t support local schools in some very important ways. Having grown up in District 7 offered me the opportunity to walk to all levels of my public education from elementary to high school (Saint Mary’s School, Gorsebrook Junior High and Queen Elizabeth High School). Maintaining the schools we have in District 7 is a vital aspect of keeping our established neighbourhoods.

I see HRM being able to support local schools by:

  • Ensuring zoning in school areas can only be used for schools. An example is my work with Saint Mary’s School in Schmidtville HCD and before that, I fought to keep this school open with my neighbours.
  • Ensuring crosswalk safety. An example of this is my work on the Walk n’ Roll committee
  • Using the Councillor Participatory Budget to help fund school activities or needs
  • Preserving greenspaces such as advocating for the Halifax Common so to have viable safe outdoor spaces to play within the Halifax urban core.
