Homelessness is a complex issue that affects many individuals and families. It is a problem that requires a multifaceted approach to address effectively. There are various factors that contribute to homelessness, including poverty, lack of affordable housing, mental health issues, and substance abuse. It is important for HRM to come together to provide support and resources for those experiencing homelessness. By working together, we can make a positive impact and help those in need find stable housing and support services.
To improve the homeless situation I advocate for:
- Improved demolition controls
- Protection of existing affordable units
- HRM to acknowledge its role in the housing crisis, assume its responsibility and work with all levels of government to help solve it
Start with:
- A commitment to use public land for real affordable housing, i.e. Cogswell District
- Ensure to reduce red tape to preserve buildings and expedite the conversion to affordable housing
- Repurpose empty municipal buildings for housing
- Work to create land trusts and co-ops
ACTIONS:
1) Reducing demand from speculators is key via land consolidation regulation
2) Retention of public land for cooperative and community land trust housing
3) Launching a study on housing needs and the diversity of styles in the housing stock needed to create a more accessible market place.
4) Ensure planning policy addresses accessibility and inclusivity issues in buildings and urban planning. An example is ensuring affordable housing is built to meet the needs of the disabled community.
