Halifax South Downtown, District 7

Halifax’s (Kjipuktuk) South Downtown District 7, cradled by the historic Citadel Hill, is steeped in a diverse and rich heritage. This district encompasses historic neighborhoods including Old South Suburb, Schmidtville, Fort Massey, Oakland Road, Robie’s Field, and Young Avenue, each contributing to the area’s rich tapestry. It is renowned for its significant military sites that echo Halifax’s storied past.

The district’s urban forest and the iconic Point Pleasant Park add a layer of historic charm with their tree-lined streets. It hosts several notable Halifax landmarks including the Halifax Common, Public Gardens, Camp Hill Cemetery, and the Town Clock.

Home to esteemed institutions like Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University, and NSCAD, District 7 is vibrant with academic life, drawing tens of thousands of students annually.

In the heart of this historical and educational hub is downtown Halifax, which accounts for nearly half of the office occupations in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and generates approximately 20% of the commercial and residential property taxes paid across all of HRM.

Land Acknowledgement

We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present, and future caretakers of this land. We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors of African descent who came before us to this land.

“We are all treaty people, and we are all in this together. We all have a part to play in reconciliation and making a positive impact on the lives of Indigenous people. Your role depends on your level of involvement. Some roles are more active than others, but all are important.”
