Hello Friends and Neighbours,
Another week has gone by and I want to share with you some updates. I am tackling homelessness and conservation of our greenspaces this week.
Please join me today, August 3rd at 12PM for Natal Day cake and learn some history at the rear of the Halifax Central Library. Happy 275th birthday Halifax!
Point Pleasant Park:
I am still collecting signatures for the paper petition to present to Regional Council. If you or anyone would like to sign, please come to the Tower Rd entrance after 1 PM on Sunday, Aug. 4th. My petition speaks to the urgent need for affordable, diverse housing and opposes the use of Point Pleasant Park for encampments due to the current risk of major fires and its status as Federal Crown property. HRM does not have clear jurisdiction under the 1875 agreement to do as they wish with the park.
I know many have signed an online petition, but HRM does not accept online petitions, and my petition focuses on housing and Point Pleasant Parks protection against fire. I did not create the online petition, but my paper petition will be used as evidence at the next Regional Council meeting to address why the park is being considered for encampments.
I have been working with Councillor Pam Lovelace, who has agreed to put a motion forward at the Aug 6th Regional Council meeting to remove Point Pleasant Park from the designated list of future encampment sites.
see the motion:
I will send this petition to our MP Andy Fillmore asking him to intervene with Point Pleasant Park. His office wants the petition. Plus he has made a statement about encampment sites:

The Federal government has the land, empty buildings and finances to do what needs to be done to provide the housing. Canada also signed on to the UN agreement- https://www.homelesshub.ca/resource/human-rights-approach-national-protocol-homeless-encampments-canada%C2%A0
